Union membership comes with many benefits. Union workers generally earn as much as 30% more in wages than non union workers in the same job classification. But pay is only the tip of the iceberg. Union workers collectively bargain with employers to establish agreements (contracts) that regulate working conditions, salaries, benefits and rights for workers. Employees working under a collective bargaining agreement are guaranteed representation of shop stewards when dealing with their bosses, ensuring the employer is not violating the terms of the contract. Union density in the workforce gives the union leverage in negotiating contracts. Low union density benefits the employer as less leverage is available to the union during contract negotiations.
